Yes, I did the viral Eras Tour treadmill challenge — the one inspired by Taylor Swift’s training regimen for her 3‑hour shows. It’s basically a progressive‑endurance fever dream: run fast for the upbeat songs, jog or walk for the slower ones, and try not to burn out before “Karma.” It’s a surprisingly legit workout… and also a surprisingly humbling one. Especially when you realize halfway through that you’re using the wrong playlist and missing an entire album’s worth of tracks. When Taylor famously asks if you have 10 minutes, for this particular run the answer was heck yes… but times 29.

Yesterday’s 20‑miler almost didn’t happen — I woke up feeling sick and genuinely questioned whether I should push it. But I took it mile by mile and got it done. These are the runs that remind you why marathon training is equal parts physical and mental.

🧪 Gear testing gone wrong (and right)

Because no training cycle is complete without a questionable decision, I also made the mistake of testing a new race‑day crop top without pre‑washing it. Mid‑run, I looked down and saw color bleeding onto my skin and immediately panicked that I was chafing through the fabric.

Good news: it wasn’t chafing.
Bad news: I now know exactly what shade of red this shirt bleeds when mixed with sweat, and that it can go through an outer layer as well. Yikes.

Consider this your friendly reminder: wash your running gear first.

📈 Race outlook

After a surprisingly strong performance at the E. Murray Todd Half Marathon, I’m heading into London with some reasonable goals, a flexible mindset and a belief in the occasional unexpected race-day magic.

If there’s one thing running keeps teaching me, it’s that your body will surprise you — sometimes in the best ways.

This time, they did.

Casey and I headed to Monmouth County Park for the E. Murray Todd Half Marathon — a low‑key, well‑organized race with an open course and minimal logistics. The kind of race that lets you focus on running, not chaos. We drove down through thick fog, but by the time we lined up, the air had settled into warm, misty conditions that felt surprisingly runnable for early March.

What I didn’t expect was to run a massive half marathon PR — my first since 2023.

Honestly, I thought those days were in the rear‑view mirror. I’ve been training steadily, yes, but between parenting, work, and the realities of midlife running, I’d quietly accepted that maybe my PR era had passed. I went into this race with the opposite of PR energy after barely running the week before. My plan was simply to treat it as a supported long run with a bib.

But sometimes the body surprises you. Sometimes the fitness you’ve been building shows up before your brain catches up.

More than the PR itself, the race gave me a clearer picture of where I am heading into the London Marathon — and what still needs attention.

What the Race Taught Me

🔥 1. You heat up faster than you think.

By mile three, I was regretting not wearing my @sarahmarierunningco race crop. The temperature wasn’t high, but effort compounds heat. London’s weather is unpredictable, so this was a good reminder to dress for the second half of the race, not the first mile.

💧 2. Hydration starts days before.

I didn’t drink nearly enough in the 48 hours leading up to the race, and I felt it — not dramatically, but in that subtle “why do my legs feel slightly wooden?” way. For London, hydration is part of the taper, not an afterthought.

📵 3. Turn off your phone notifications.

I forgot. I paid the price. Every buzz pulled me out of rhythm. London will get Do Not Disturb from the moment I wake up.

🎧 4. My playlist needs a refresh.

Music shouldn’t feel stale at mile 10. And ideally, the pace should get stronger as your legs really start to tire. This week’s project: rebuild the rotation with songs that match my current training paces.

A Small Moment of Magic

When we arrived, I stepped out of the car and noticed a broken clothespin on the ground. I laughed and left it. When we returned post‑race, someone had placed it neatly on my door handle — as if I’d forgotten it. It felt like a tiny, odd little sign, so yes, the “Beast Mode” My Little Pony mashup came home with me.

The Post‑Race Reward

We stopped at Tatum’s Table in Lincroft for coffee and their croffle flight — crème brûlée, tiramisu, cannoli, berries, whipped cream.

A croissant‑waffle tasting platter is exactly the kind of thing that makes sense only after 13.1 miles.

I stretched it over two days and have no regrets. The Whipped Lucky Charms Latte was pure serotonin.

Where This Leaves Me for London

This race didn’t just give me a PR — it gave me data. It reminded me that fitness isn’t linear, and progress doesn’t always show up on the weeks you expect it to. It showed me that even after a down week, the endurance is there. The mental steadiness is there. And the gaps are fixable.

I may have thought my half marathon PR days were behind me, but apparently they had other plans.

London is getting close. And now, I’m heading into it with a little more confidence — focused on my fundraising, my training and a lot more curiosity about what else might still be possible.

I intentionally went with the Hyperion Max 2 rather than the Hyperions as my goal was something a bit faster, but still with a bit of cushion. As a runner who’s previously broken each of my feet that wears custom orthotics for stability, I do not want to fully sacrifice my safety for speed — basically ever.

Out of the box, I have to say I thought these were gorgeous. I was also kind of terrified about wearing anything remotely close to white because — stress. Somehow I found these got less dirty than my darker shoes. And that bright bottom still was popping for the big day.

And even after the race, these kicks were still poppin! So love these decorative butterflies, an accent I bought from the fabulous Britney Allen.

After Boston, I decided to keep to the line and went with the Hyperion Max 3 for the Berlin Marathon. I didn’t realize how much of an upgrade the 3s are until I pulled back out my 2s for several runs before returning to the 3s. Woah. Huge.

The 3s have the same dependable support I loved in the 2s but a bit more of a cushion feel to get me through longer mileage and my body feel it less. And still all while accommodating my much needed custom orthotics.

Overall 650 miles across these two models and they’re still my reigning long race fave.

The Runner’s Journey

Training for a marathon is never just about the workouts. It’s about resilience, discipline, and finding strength when the miles get hard. Runners know the grind: early mornings, long runs in the rain, the mental battles at mile 20.  

But when I lace up, I’m not just running for myself. I’m running for families impacted by brain and spine conditions. Families who face challenges far greater than hitting the wall.  

Why the Brain & Spine Foundation

The Brain & Spine Foundation provides vital support for people living with neurological conditions. In the UK, 11 million people live with a neurological condition, and 1 in 6 of us will face one in our lifetime. These conditions are responsible for 1 in 5 deaths and cause around 140,000 deaths annually.

Behind every statistic is a story. My family’s story is one of love, loss, and resilience. Running for this cause is my way of honoring that story and helping others write theirs with hope.  

Giving Tuesday: A Runner’s Kickoff

Giving Tuesday is like the starting line of a global race for generosity. Last year, donors in the U.S. gave $3.6 billion in just 24 hours, and giving in 2025 is projected to surpass $4 billion.  

For me, it’s the perfect moment to launch my fundraising campaign. Just as runners know the importance of starting strong, Giving Tuesday is the chance to set the pace for the months ahead.

Final Thoughts

Runners understand that every mile matters. This marathon is 26.2 miles, but the impact goes far beyond the finish line. On Giving Tuesday, I invite you to join me in running for something bigger—supporting the Brain & Spine Foundation and turning miles into meaning.  

From high temps to surprise WWII bomb discoveries (yes, really) to airport chaos… Berlin threw everything at me. But the streets, the energy, the cause — it was all worth it. This was another race I ran in support of the wonderful work of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. So appreciative of their team to allow me again to fundraise for their cause and for all the pre-race support and encouragement! Team ASAN is truly the best.

Training

For the second time, I decided to train using Runna’s program. I chose to do the version which included strength sessions as well, as I knew I really needed to make this a priority to help combat my issues with runner’s knee. Did I end up committing fully to the latter? No… but hoping to really make it happen in my next marathon training cycle.

• Pros

  • Easily syncs to your Google calendar, and makes it easy to slide around if you need to change up your schedule

  • Mile updates and paces will come over your headphones even if you are running with Peloton or other apps

  • Syncs with your own treadmill for indoor runs

• Cons

  • $15 / month price tag throughout your training cycle

  • Adding the strength option only really adds a rep counter, so not classes to support — and not easy to shift away from this mid-cycle if (like me) you don’t end up loving this part

  • The recommendations to catchup on missed activities don’t always reflect safe options to avoid injury 

Race Prep

For the first time in perhaps forever, I took a flight and did not check a bag. I was a little anxious about this. Could I really make it work? I tried to limit what I took to the essentials — and, as much as possible, to plan to keep my purchases while I was in Berlin to the essentials. Well, more or less. Linking some of my race trip essentials here.

I tried to keep my tourist activities to a minimum before the race, which was only mildly successful. Of course I spent some time at the race expo — a must do. Knowing that race day would be extremely hot, I decided to pick up a large water flask I could run with. Of course I had to get one with a bit of Berlin flair. Felt like an appropriate souvenir as well! I also forgot to bring my recovery slides but picked up another pair of Oofos — this time the slides since they were on sale and would be perfect for my post-race bag.

I didn’t do a ton on Friday but I did make sure to visit the East Side Gallery. When I looked through all the options of things and places to visit, it was an instant standout to me. I’m also pulling together more on where I stayed, the places where I ate, etc. I’ll add a link to that here as well once it is live!

The Saturday before race day, I made sure to make time to head over to meet up with the local run club for the Berlin Braves x Bandit shakeout run. I was admittedly ill-prepared for how wildly popular this would be or I would have arrived wayyyyyy earlier. If you’re headed to one of these, recommend you do the same. The run itself was lovely. We went down by the water and into a park, where we paused for a nice group photo. As this was a solo trip for me, it was nice to be surrounded by so many enthusiastic runners, if only for a little bit of the day!

I also unfortunately went a little overboard on the electrolytes. I realized early evening the day before the race that I hadn’t had enough water or electrolytes. In a panic, I decided to have a lot of both — which I learned is not good to do. Apparently you can’t cram in your training or pre-race hydration. I ended up ok but did have a pretty bad headache that morning and was slightly terrified it would mess up my race. Thankfully, it did not. Phew.

Race Day

I chose to check a bag, so I could put some recovery slides in just in case my feet were extra wrecked. This meant sacrificing the post-race poncho but meant I could easily have clothes to change into (the Berlin Marathon has a changing room and showers — quite a unique setup) as well as somewhere to drop a phone charger. I wanted to make sure my phone had battery to get me back to the hotel, and to easily access the weekend pass to the U-bahn which all race participants receive.

The race itself was the most challenging one I’ve ever endured, as I happily took two cups of water at each stop — one to drink and another to pour over my head. Which is why my bib also found itself hanging on for dear life as I crossed the finish line! Thankfully it did make it throughout. Several runners shared they lost theirs along the way, or moved them into their pockets, and lost their race times. Here’s hoping as many of those as possible were able to recoup those times because I cannot even imagine…

A raceday highlight for me was listening to the amazing voices of family, friends, and fellow Still I Run ambassadors throughout my run thanks to the amazing app called HollarHype. I’m obsessed. And so grateful for each message I received. You can take a listen too in the below Instagram post recapping my experience!

Overall, I will admit I was initially a little bummed. This race is the one that people choose to get that PR. To push through the relatively fast course and get a time that typically is a bit or well under other races. Well… that wasn’t in the cards for me. It was so miserably hot and I was shocked to find it did not even best my 2024 NYC Marathon time! However, a completion is a completion and this one? Was hard earned.

So it wasn’t the time I wanted but I did it. I’m thrilled to now have my third Abbott World Marathon Majors star, and to have done it in a way where I was still able to enjoy a fair amount of what Berlin had to offer.

5K is easy to knock off and if, like me, you’re training hard in this hot summertime weather, can’t get enough of hydration chews and such to get through and keep your body fueled properly!!

So soon I’ll be able to add some new clips to this reel with some of the highlights of my running journey, and I can’t wait. Berlin is supposed to be one of the fastest of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. I’m very curious to see how I fare myself! I’ve been told it’s flat and fast so hoping all the miles flown to get there will lead to a nice payoff.

Yesterday was almost another skipped day in my training plan but I took a late lunch and hopped on for Peloton run with Joslyn Thompson Rule. Much to my surprise it was my 900th run and I got a lovely shoutout. So much feels like it’s lining up that I’m excited for what’s in store these remaining 100+ days of training! Sounds like a lot but it’s really not. Eek! Thankfully I signed up with Runna to help me with a training plan so even when I have to take some detours along the way, they’ll keep me on track. More to share on all in the coming months!

The race weekend overall was fantastic (with the exception of missing my original Amtrak train and having to book a last minute flight). I came into town on Friday so I could be there for Saturday’s Night of Inspiration with Tedy’s Team, so I was able to put said step and repeat to some good use! I really enjoyed the shakeout run I did with Rabbit and Kofuzi and getting to see all their merch at their pop-up!

Race day itself, I was just grateful we hit the jackpot with nice weather — no rain in the forecast, not too cold, not too hot. I’ll take it. We met up at the Lenox Hotel as a team before making our way over to our charity bus which took us to Charity Village in Hopkinton. The ride went for a while but it flew by, including a lovely group sing of “Friends in Low Places.” Never too early.

Key race day moments

• Charity village: OH CRAP, I know what I forgot. To pack breakfast. Seriously, the mother of all misses. I’ll never do this one again! I am very grateful for one of my teammates who donated a mini CLIF Bar to the cause and to my decision to throw in one of the Honey Stinger Waffles — just in case. Since I did all of my training solo, the Charity Village was a wonderful opportunity to get to meet more of my Tedy’s Team teammates and learn more about their experiences. So many people in the team who have overcome so much — so so inspiring. And to have

  

• Mile 1: As I started the race, I realized yet again I was starting a race with a toll of toilet paper in hand. No way I’m running 7 miles in Boston like I did in NYC with this in my hand. Bye, TP roll!

• Mile 13: The “Scream Tunnel” at Wellesley College definitely did not disappoint. These students brought their A-game and I loved every minute of it.

• Mile 19: I got a surprise text morning of from my sister’s in-laws that they would be on the course, so I got some unexpected hugs and encouragement along the way. Lovely surprise and even better I managed to get the texts from them on my watch … see below for more on that!

• Mile 20: I don’t think I can ever run a race without pickle juice again (this one from Pickle Juice is my fave). It was such a game changer. Helpful with refueling so late in the race — the right zing of salty brine. I’d heard much about the cramping people often experience on the course, but I credit Pickle Juice and downhill runs on my SOLE TT8 Treadmill for keeping that all at bay.

• Mile 21: I heard so much more about Wellesley College that Boston College’s students and their amazing support was an unexpected boost! I found someone in the crowd to exchange screams of “Roll Tide!” with and received more enthusiastic chants of my name during this stretch. I did not realize how much I would need it, too!

• Mile 22: When my Apple Watch battery died on me, I was so tired I about had a meltdown. Yes, it feels ridiculous to say even as I type it out now. I don’t think I realized just how much my smart watch is a bit of a safety blanket for me as I run. I especially wanted it now so I could anxiously look down every few minutes to see how close we were to 5:30 because ugh, no pressure, right? You can tell in my photos from the day when the watch is no longer working because there are several photos of me holding my phone. Sad but true.

  

• Mile 24-25: I think this Citgo sign will seriously haunt my dreams. So close. So far. A mirage? I kept trying and failing to pretend it wasn’t even there but I think unless my eyes were shut, there would have been no way to avoid seeing it.

  In the end? I did it! Not only did I beat the cut off, I bested my time at the NYC marathon. I’m thrilled. Couldn’t have asked for more!

  

• Post event: So grateful for my colleague Alia who joined me at the Lenox Hotel to celebrate and hang with me as I inhaled slice after slice of pizza and relished my time in these Normatec Recovery Boots. And to find Tedy Bruschi himself still super ready to jump in for a photo so late in the day. Much appreciated!

In the spirit of “nothing new on race day”, I wanted disclose the things I ignored that on and was totally fine just the same...

Where are we running to this weekend?

So far, I have been totally surprised that this has worked out to be perfect timing. Knowing that I just have to do any run of sorts in a given day lessens the time commitment — less pressure equals easier commitment. If I’m tight on time, a quick 15-20 minute lunchtime run equals goal met. And it also has given me a new goal at a time when I am on the other side of a big check mark.

The 100 mile goal with Susie’s Striders is a bit more ambitious. I like this because it will force me to figure in some long runs into my schedule — something easier to scale back on when you don’t have a race deadline and oh if say the run just won’t stop. Not that we in New Jersey know what that is like at all…

How’s it going? A week in, I’ve kept my streak alive and knocked out a total of 18.69 miles towards the 100. Not too shabby!

It’s Mental Health Month here in the US (thus the timing for the SIR Runstreak) and I’m trying to make it a commitment to not only move but also pause to stretch and/or recharge. Haven’t done it today yet, but definitely going to make it happen on Peloton.

What I’m Reading

I just finished an advanced reader copy through NetGalley of Kathleen Barber’s Both Things Are True. Super cute and read I mostly devoured in one sitting last night. Coming out on 9/1 to add to your GoodReads watchlist or to pre-order here!

I am also listening to the audio version of The Comeback Summer by the fab duo of Ali Brady (pen name of writing BFFs Alison Hammer and Bradeigh Godfrey.) A fun read as the weather starts to warm up and I start to think more about warmer long run mornings!

I was not as in the know when I did the 2024 NYC Marathon about all the various brand events. I approached Boston totally differently, preparing a list of all of the various places I wanted to hit up (Rabbit, Brooks, Bandit, UYN, Marathon Sports, to name a few), their hours of operation and signing up for any events I might want to plan to attend. When I looked at the list of free events (so many!), making it out to one of the Rabbit ones was at the top of my list.

You probably can’t find me in any of the footage he shared himself, but trust me, I was there! I even managed to make some new friends (of course) while at the event. It ended up being a beautiful sunny day and I was very happy I decided to go — even though I have to admit I managed to slightly roll my ankle. (Thankfully, spoiler alert, it didn’t knock me out for the race.)

It was a great experience being around all the runners. I don’t think you can really get a sense for just how many people were out and about along the Charles River until you take a look at the reel I shared on Instagram. So many people — and this was just during the window of this particular shakeout run.

Following the run, they had samples out from Cheribundi. I have to say I’m sold. Have that truly chilled and I am in. SO GOOD. Since returning from Boston, I’ve put it into my regular routine, finding it so helpful in reducing my inflammation and therefore, my recovery time as well. I love both the Pure and the Pure Concentrate but think it’ll be the Pure Concentrate that I’ll add into my go to’s on a regular basis. Pit Crew, here I come!

I came home with a ton of new Rabbit gear because I am obsessed. It is all so soft. These Boston slides came in clutch for my tired and sore feet after the marathon. I have been living in them even now that we’re more than a week out post-race. Magic.

I’ve already signed up but there’s still time to register before things kick off tomorrow. There is some great swag (I can’t wait to break in my neon yellow hat — the perfect accessory for early morning runs) and a chance at some great prizes and giveaways.

As a writer, if this was a novel, I guess you’d be joining this journey already in progress. Hopefully that makes it more fun? Instead of starting from scratch, we’re linking up together — me coming in with a few wins and a whole lot of learnings of the ups and downs along the way.

Why now?

I think when you start a new hobby, you feel like you have little to say. Like why am I an authority? Who is going to care? But after spending the last 5+ years pounding the pavement, I’ve realized all I’ve missed out on sharing that I could have if I had an audience more interested in it. So … hello there reader.

What can you expect?

So much in running I started feeling like it wasn’t meant for me. I started running more seriously when I was 40+. I don’t have a ton of time. I can’t join running groups. I’ve maybe missed the moment to be able to get down to faster running speeds. I’m here to say that’s ok. You can still be successful. You can toe the line at the biggest start lines. You can get excited for the cool new fuel or latest swag from the big brands. You belong. Let’s talk about it all.

So how often will new content drop?

Well, you’re in luck. I’m just off of my most recent Abbott World Major in Boston. I have a lot of content and this? This is the perfect home. I’ll be playing some catch-up, publishing potentially a bit more frequently to start but over time, anticipate this will normalize to around more like 1-2 posts per week. But we’ll see.
